In a surprising turn of events, Fortnite, the most popular battle royale game that dominated screens from 2018 to 2020, recently experienced an incredible resurgence.
After a period of relative popularity, the game reclaimed its glory by reintroducing the iconic original map. This nostalgic throwback sparked a massive resurgence in player interest, with millions flocking back to the game daily. Fortnite’s unexpected revival acts as proof of the game’s enduring appeal and its ability to reinvent itself to capture the imaginations of players once again, as the return of the beloved original map has sparked conversations in classrooms and lunchrooms. It may be a distraction for students but it sure has shed a light on nostalgia.
Many students have shared their opinions on the return of Fortnite. Surprisingly, a large number did not care nor play Fortnite during its recent spike in popularity; however, those who did found immense joy in their experience, from committing complete buffoonery with near and dear friends to playing alone on the map they have yearned for for years. For instance, the “Skybase” method (where players build above everyone else and hope not to be knocked down), or playing stealthily by hiding in bushes across the map, reinvigorated interest. Personally, these methods are great when playing with friends.
The OG map brought back a flood of memories, and students couldn’t help but share their feelings. One student said, “My cousins and I couldn’t stop playing. It was like reliving the good old days, and the original map just made it better.” And as the news of Fortnite’s original map spread, it became a hot topic in classes. Even students who weren’t into Fortnite before found it intriguing. One student shared, “I didn’t care much about Fortnite, but when they brought back the OG map, I had to check it out. Surprisingly fun to be honest. I can see why everyone’s talking about it.” During interviews, it was clear that Fortnite’s return was more than just a game; it was a sentimental experience.
While not everyone jumped on the Fortnite bandwagon, the majority enjoyed the gift Epic Games provided. Fortnite’s revival showcased how a simple video game can create shared moments and bring students together through the pleasure of nostalgia, leaving a mark on the youth.
