Latino Bites, a new Mexican-Colombian restaurant highlighting traditional Latin American flavors, officially opened on Nov. 1 in Sunnyside, Queens. This addition has quickly caught the attention of many Sunnyside residents.
For a community like Sunnyside that relies heavily on small local restaurants, each opening adds character to the neighborhood. Known for its mix of diverse food spots, Sunnyside’s food scene reflects the diversity of Queens. The opening of Latino Bites also continues a recent trend of new businesses taking over long-standing empty storefronts and marks a shift toward more food-focused small businesses in the area.
Latino Bites brings a Mexican and Colombian fusion menu to the neighborhood, tying into its larger brand, which began as a food truck in 2014. The founder, John Bedoya, expanded from a small “mini food truck” in 2014 to a full restaurant in Jackson Heights before branching into additional locations, including this Sunnyside spot. The restaurant serves a variety of dishes from both cultures, such as empanadas, tacos and Colombian-style burgers and burritos.
Latino Bites explains its identity clearly online. A message on the restaurant’s website states that they represent “Mexican and Colombian fusion” tying together street food and cultural dishes. On community forums like r/SunnysideQueens, early customers described the food as “unique” and said the opening “fills a spot Sunnyside was missing,” especially for late-night eating.
Latino Bites could become another regular stop for commuters, students, families and others just searching for a quick bite. Its menu’s variety and long hours make it accessible, but some locals are still questioning whether the neighborhood needs more fast-food spots. Still, if the early crowds and online reactions continue, Latino Bites may settle into Sunnyside as one of the newest go-to places, due to its blending of two cuisines, all while adding a sense of freshness to 46th Street in Sunnyside.
